We Choose Canada Stories

Irwin’s story – Canadian

Canadians, wherever we live, share common values. These values are reflected in our public policies that serve a country of vast distances and a relatively small population. As Canadians, we believe and understand what community means. And because we understand the meaning of community, we believe that we have a responsibility to care for one another. Whether it’s a public broadcasting system or a national health care system, we believe that all Canadians should contribute to and share in the public good.

We believe in "order, peace and good government", a community oriented outlook that defines our core values.

I choose to live in Canada because of this and because its a beautiful country with enormous potential.

Bonnie’s story – Canadian

My father was a Canadian and my mother was an American, both living in Canada. My two sisters and I were born in the USA in order to have dual citizenship, but were raised here in Canada. Because we are very close to the Peace Bridge, we spent a lot of our vacation time as children in New York State, as all my relatives lived there. From little child on I can remember a feeling of peacefulness when we crossed over the border entering Canada at Fort Erie. I never used to think much of it; I just thought it must be a slight case of homesickness being relieved. But even now when we go over to Buffalo, or the Southern tier, I experience a feeling of "fresh air" and calm once I am back in Canada.

I still have many relatives spread all over the USA and I love them dearly and visit frequently. They all love Canada and visit here yearly. Toronto is a favourite holiday destination as well as the beautiful north country--Muskoka, Georgian Bay etc.

We have it all. Beautiful Lakes, lush forests, wonderful communities, and very friendly, polite people.

I can't say enough about this great country of ours. I LOVE CANADA and am proud to be a CANADIAN !!!

Shaista’s story - Asian

Why do I choose to live in Canada? Hmmm… in some ways it is really quite easy to answer but then it is difficult to put in words (for some of us emotions are hard to pinpoint or give a meaning to). Yes, my primary reason for choosing Canada is rather connected to how I feel about it deep down in my heart. In order to understand this statement, let me first answer, “Why did I choose Canada in the first place?”

I was not born here. In fact I immigrated here only four years ago. I chose Canada for its liberal immigration policy and for its cultural diversity. I chose Canada because I am an explorer at heart and having born in Asia and educated in Europe, I wanted to live somewhere new and exciting.

I chose Canada because all Canadians who I came across during my university days in England, were the friendliest and warmest people. To me, that speaks volumes about the society. And after meeting hundreds of people during the last four years in this great country, my impression has not changed about its people.

Canadians have not disappointed me. I choose to live here because Canadians are so easy to get along with; because they have a balanced view of life; and because they are proud of their unique heritage yet remain open to others.

I choose to live here because Canada seems to offer hope for peace in this chaotic and lunatic world. Canada is a beautiful country with splendid terrain. The freedom it offers its residents and being openly accepted for who I am.

I live here because this is my home- and there is no place like home!

Pankaj’s story – From Uganda, from Indian origin

In Canada, no government official points a gun at you and demands your hard earned money. The police do not stop you and ask for a bribe because you have worked hard to make a decent living. May god bless Canada and the great citizens of Canada.

Bob’s story – Canadian

More than anything else the four words that make Canada great are:
• Tolerance
• Goodwill
• Compassion and
• Respect.
They are what we export in abundance and the reason we can import so much of the same from other countries. They are the four words that I believe define world peace.
