We Choose Canada Stories

Neil’s story – Canadian

To begin with, most people live in Canada because they either a) immigrated from poorer Countries and saw Canada as a land of opportunity and growth, or b) they were born here. Only until recently did Canadians try to stop building their Country and start focusing on their identity; because other countries saw us as Americans, not Canadians. We were in the same class as the U.S. And what person in their right mind would want to be considered a U.S. citizen except for citizens of that country. Personally, I don't even now why Americans are proud of their ‘way”.

Canada has become a melting pot since the day of it's birth. The first settlers were Cavemen, then Natives, then the French, then the English, and people from other countries all over the world started moving here. That's why Canada is so diverse in it's population. But in trying to cater to all the other countries, Canada lost it's identity, and sort of became a joke throughout the rest of the world. Our military is low in numbers, which makes us a very little threat, but the military we do have is highly and very well trained. So what is our identity? PEOPLE. We value life in a different way then the rest of the world. However, the people that were born here take many things for granted. Most of us younger generations didn't have struggle and nearly die to get here. Everything has been pretty much spoon fed to us our whole lives.
There are a few reasons why I live in Canada. Mainly because I consider Canada my home. I also like a lot of the people here, because a lot of us are a little more aware of what's really going on, and the ones that don't, refuse to accept that their perfect lives can be altered by anything, for example: Global Warming, or Nuclear War. I like the fact that I am allowed to voice my opinion and not be ridiculed.

Allison’s story – from Afghanistan

To me, there is no greater place to live than Canada, especially the Maritimes. Afghanistan is the very center of Eurasia, and is also one of the oldest civilizations on the planet. If any country's history could teach us all about how to keep strong in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, it's Afghanistan.

I am very proud to be a citizen of Canada, while we are solid in our support for the Afghan people, through CIDA and our affiliations with the UN. Canada is setting a good example through action, not just words. I would love to represent our wonderfully compassionate and strong country in a region who needs more of it. We are a truly global community now, and it's time that we share more than money, technology, and media; it's time that we shared our people. I would be glad to represent Canada, especially in Afghanistan.

K’s story - born in Iran and was raised in Canada.

If tomorrow all the things were gone that I have worked for all my life, and I had to start all over again, I'd thank my lucky stars that I'm living in Canada.

I am proud to be Canadian, because I know that my flag stands for freedom. I know that many soldiers bearing my flag have died to defend freedom all over the world. I know that if given the opportunity, many would volunteer to do the same again. Not because we are war seekers, but because Canadians, more than any other people in the world know that oppression and tyranny should not stand. A nation built by those fleeing repression and despotism all over the world, a nation built by those seeking democracy and a better life, Canada's flag flies in all continents as a symbol of freedom, be it gained through war or through peace.

From East to West, from the height of the Rockies to the shores of Newfoundland, from the glory of Quebec to the majesty of Victoria, Canadians have opened their arms to the world time and time again. They have said if you intend to work hard and build a better life for yourself, if you intend to live a free life and help others, you are welcome to share this land.

Canada is a nation built by ambitious, by the industrious, and by the freedom lovers. It is a nation with unlimited potential- a nation that may become the peak of civilization. Canada has the opportunity to become the premiere defender of freedom, prime source of innovation, and the pinnacle of patriotic entrepreneurial spirit. Canada is a young country, and its gift is its potential.
Sure, like all those in their youth Canada has made some mistakes. She may have gone in the wrong direction here or there, she may have erred once or twice, and she may have had a binge or two. But, Canada can overcome the hangover of her mistakes, and that's what counts at the end of the day.

To all the pessimists, I say, Rome was not built in one day. It took a great deal of hard work and honour to turn Rome's potential into greatness. I for one sleep happily under the flag of my adopted home knowing that there are Canadians out there who are willing to work hard to make my nation, our Canada, the greatest country on the face of this planet.

That is why I choose Canada, and soon enough, so will the rest of the world.

O, land of blue unending skies,
Mountains strong and sparkling snow,
A scent of freedom in the wind,
O'er the emerald fields below.

To thee we brought our hopes, our dreams,
For thee we stand together,
Our land of peace, where proudly flies,
The Maple Leaf forever.

Gilberto  Alzate's story - from Colombia

I am a refugge claimant.  I am from Colombia. The group FARC declared me a military target and I was force to leave Colombia without any hope of returning. I am Industrial Engineer and studied information technology.
I went to IEP conference yesterday (march 16) and found interesting aspects
that I would like to know deeply.

Thank you for your time.

Callie Nicols' story - Canadian

Oh Canada, what a truly wonderful place, so very big and beautiful.

I choose Canada not because she has a pretty face, but because she is truly free. Residents and Citizens alike are free to be who they are, use their voices and be heard. In Canada, one is encouraged to experience the many wonderful cultures of the world right here in our own nation. Almost every country is represented here in its residents and we are proud to show it and express it without fear. Even those who are openly against other nationalities or religious beliefs being here are free to express their opinions. Some or all of us may not like those opinions, but it is true freedom.

I am proud to be a Canadian, I am proud to live in a society that encourages its members to share their heritage and their culture to the good of the nation.

I choose Toronto, Canada because it has so much to offer.  It has a worldly presence; it is a good size (big but not too big) and has great people living in it.  We have just about everything here someone could possibly want. Great industry, great visitor attraction and star power.

I choose Canada, who wouldn't? What a country!
